We all await committee action on gun bills

11/20/2021

The Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence highlighted bills

  • HB 2437/S 1562, awaits joint committee action. Often, good gun safety bills cannot move forward because their is little awareness of statistics on unsafety firearms practices. For example, how many guns come from other states. 👍 like

NRA highlighted bills

  • HB 2512, awaits joint committee action. It eliminates the freedom of any community in Massachusetts from restricting guns or locations where they can be prohibited.  👎 dislike
  • HB 2536, awaits joint committee action. It allows anyone from another state to bring guns into Massachusetts with only one restriction. They must be locked in a case. This goes against the idea of keeping illegal street guns out of the state. 👎 dislike

Testimony before the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security occurred earlier this week. Now we await committee action.

Testimony allowed on 11/16 concerning 55-gun bills

11/12/2021

Testimony related to 55-gun bills will be held on Tuesday November 16 at 11:00. Many bills will not make it out of the committee, but public awareness and testimony will further gun safety bills in Massachusetts. Please go to the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security website for bill details, the link to attend remotely and the link to testify in person or in writing.

Funding for gun violence prevention money is up for a vote

10/27/2021

  • Amendment 837 is scheduled for a floor vote. It increases the funding in Massachusetts for gun violence prevention from 10 to 50 million. 👍 like

This bill is scheduled to be voted on by the full House of Representatives on October 28. Please contact your Representative and ask for support of Amendment 837. You can find all your representatives at Common Cause.

The wait starts for committee action on a silencers and multiple gun purchases

  • HB 1570 is to be heard in committee. It legalizes silencers in Massachusetts. The NRA promotes these for the “many benefits of reducing harmful sound.”  As usual, they never consider gun safety. Crimes committed with the use of silencers are particularly difficult to trace the source of the shooting. 👎 dislike
  • SB 942/HB 1734 is to be heard in committee. Limit to number of firearm purchases to 15 a year. The only ones buying that many guns are reselling them on the street.👍 like

Both bills had committee hearings in late July. Now, the NRA wants their members to put pressure on the members of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary concerning these bills. Therefore, this is the time for gun violence prevention supporters to contact their State Senators and Representatives. Ask for opposition to HB 1570 and support of SB 942/HB 1734.
