Obvious to most people, a major cause of southern boarder problems is guns and violence in Honduras, Guatemala and Ecuador. The obvious solution is to reduce the flow of guns into those countries. Violent gangs and drug cartel power exists because of access to guns.
Unfortunately, President Trump just announced the U.S. would withdraw from an international arms treaty. It is no coincidence that he announced this at the NRA convention, the group that thrives on profits from gun sales.
From US News and World Report:
“This announcement is a misguided blow to efforts to promote international peace and security,” Adotei Akwei, deputy director for advocacy and government relations at Amnesty International, said in an emailed statement. “With this announcement the Trump administration will re-open the floodgates for arms sales with weakened human rights criteria, which could potentially fuel brutal conflicts, and make everyone less safe.”
