Iowa: Session ends – Here’s the summary

The yearly session ended last week. Two gun bills progressed this year, both favored by the NRA.  Unfortunately, the Republicans blocked all gun violence prevention bills. The failed bill for the NRA would have allowed unlocked loaded guns in cars when picking up children at school. The NRA failure is a victory for gun safety.  Their lone success was to further an Iowa constitutional amendment similar to the U.S. Second Amendment. The NRA pushed this forward to ease future gun proliferation laws in Iowa. Completion of the amendment will require the same vote next session and then a public referendum vote.

The Bills

Failed NRA Bill

👎House File 636 would allow loaded guns to be left in cars when picking up children from schools.
